When Custom And Religion Clash
As a muslim,it is forbidden to touch someone that is not our mahram. But,in Malay we have a tradition,we called it SALAM.And it is a sign of respect to someone who is older. Here, where the custom and religion clash. It is a big dilemma for a person who do really care about her or his aurat.Imagine if me,someone who never really care about her aurat before suddenly care about her aurat now.And her big family, even the most pious one is not disturbed about that.If she resist to shake him with a man for example her uncle, people will assume she as a cocky girl and start making backbite.
Growing up in a very Malay home and environment I do know a lot about being a decent Malay but not the decent and pious muslim. As I and every other Malay kids that live in the same enviroment was thaught to respect older people. You should greet and shake all your uncle's and aunt, that is what we have been told all our lifes.
Regardless that is a big sin..Another thing is about covering yourself in house. For example, hijab.Whenever your cousin came over and you quickly put your hijab on they will say ''things'' about you.Calling you rude and other harsh word.
Being a Muslim Malay in Malaysia is very hard.Very hard.I never know about this until now. Before,I was okay with all this ''religion and custom clash' because for me it just make my life easier and I can use it to slake off my guilt.
